Family is everything, right? It just didn't feel right. Terry: Oh yeah. And so I don't know if I - I'm still kind of like - it's weird. GROSS: What's one of the most fearless things that you had to portray Omar doing up until this point in the series? Im a cruel and thoughtless person. I think that was one of the most challenging parts of his character. Fresh Air You know, our families, we know theirs. GROSS: Now, Ed Burns, one of the main writers on the show, told me that Omar's first onscreen kiss wasn't in the script and that you actually improvised it. The lines got blurred. GROSS: One of my favorite Omar scenes is like - as I remember - he doesn't have, like, the breakfast cereal that he wants, so he goes out wearing only his robe. Fresh Air And you die off camera. And he and I have been joined at the hip ever since. But I try to deliver a tape thats more or less in a usable, reasonable narrative form. I was really casting about for something to do, and it felt natural to me. I see the bad days. And I'm just proud of the fact that she even, you know, loves me and hasn't, like, kicked me out of her life for the crap I put her through. GROSS: This is FRESH AIR. Stuff happens on this show in real-time and everybody wherever you sit in all of this, dont assume that were over here with little butcher knives under the table. WILLIAMS: Yeah. He goes, you know, what? You are totally seeing things through their eyes. We'll hear more of the interview after a break. They are you, and I think its a very empathy-building experience. Jesse: Are you able to prevent people from bothering you while youre preparing to do an interview in your office? And I don't think it's necessarily like, oh, my God, Omar is going to kill me. When I found interviewing, I also found the stories, and I didnt even have to tell them myself. But I took a break for, like, two years to work in my mom's day care in the projects where she raised me at, and I did it for, like, a - about a year and nine months. So kind of diverted the energy towards me, and, you know, some words were exchanged and tempers got hot. You know, anybody that really knows me growing up, you know, in Brooklyn, you know, that's very far from my character. GROSS: I feel like maybe I understand a little bit more what you were saying, like, if you were molested, I could understand how you would feel like you didn't have that kind of physical power. GROSS: Well, your mother must be proud of you. This is FRESH AIR. And I was around the best, some of the best talent this business has to offer. Id say its not a problem in the sense that everybody knows that theres times I can talk, and theres times I cant. And just keep striving to be the best you you could be. You know, now, having said - you mentioned who they got shot by, a young - a Black teen on the streets of Baltimore. They are pictured above in Los Angeles in 2015. GROSS: So how did you get into doing music videos? Jesse: If you felt shy and insecure, why do you think you ended up in a career that is so public and performative? The story will disturb, anger and sadden you. I always thought, How the hell do you do that? Jesse: Why did interviewing feel like the right thing for you? The show is in its early stages and does not have a title just yet. I still visit my family that's incarcerated. In "The Wire," you're shot by a kid. But murder a girl? We're going to ruin this character because people are going to go out there, they're going to say, that's not real. The show is produced at WHYY-FM in Philadelphia and broadcast nationally by NPR. It's a sad place, but I like being there, oddly. Jesse: Your style on microphone is so warm and genial and considerate to your guest. But, like, I, you know, I said earlier, Omar doesn't - he doesn't operate from a you better fear me, you know, and I'm the bad - the big, bad wolf, and I'll kill everybody. Were really passionate. Theres some people who complain about the grammar, that either I said something that was ungrammatical, or a guest did. Or am I perpetuating the problem?
